Separate route plan from historic data

0

I notice that if a route plan is displayed on a map (say for editing purposes to create a future route) it will overlay the vehicle's trip history which can make it difficult to inspect the route plan and edit it.  The only workaround that I have found to this point is to edit the route so that the date of the route gets changed to a day in the future and then change it back after editing is complete.  Is there better way to remove the bread crumb trails from a historic route plan?  Using "Clear Map" clears both the trips and the route, unfortunately.

Hi Justin,

Instead of trying to edit the Route under "Route Summary" you can go to "Routes" and click the 2014-07-04_09_52_18-Routes___MyGeotab.png button. You should be able to edit the Route without seeing any other trails of Trips History.

Are you suggesting the route first be made as a generic route (which could be preserved and edited for all time) and then create copies of route plans of of this?  That is not a bad idea, but in our case it will not work.  The routes are created via an SDK application based on past day's sales and they come already assigned to the vehicle to perform the route.  Perhaps it is possible to remove the assigned vehicle from a route plan so it becomes generic, but that would be no easier than changing the route plan to a future date when there was no trip history.

So at this time, there is no way to clear trip history from the map when editing a route plan assigned to a vehicle that has generated trip history for that day?

Just to update the reason this is an issue... in this particular application, the vehicles do not get dispatched out in one single route.  A vehicle could have 4 routes in one day and the 4th route may not be defined until the day is half done.  I understand this is not typical and I imagine Geotab envisioned that routing would be completed the previous day or at least prior to the vehicle generating any historic data.  But in this instance, the ability to clear the trip history while editing a route would be a nice feature add.

Hi Justin,

Can you create a case with the specific information above as a feature request may be required for this. You can refer this forum post in the case as well.

Thanks,

Justin,

You mentioned you were using the SDK to do this.  Everything is possible that you mentioned with the SDK.  You just need to control it the way you want it controlled.  If the system is live, then push the routes up as a basic type.  When your system assigns the tech then update the route to a plan and add the device and other times.  If the route is cancelled or changed, delete it and add it back if you have to but control it with your external dispatch system (which I am guessing you are doing) since the data can be changed live throughout the day.  With some creativity you should be able to do what you are asking of the system.  Good luck.

Originally, the SDK app (a console app that ran in the background) created the original routes based on data mining the client's delivery manifests.  The 11th hour nature of the add-ons required the dispatcher to add the extra delivery into Geotab manually.  However, part of what I needed to to for them was have additional shipment information sent to the Garmin as part of the message, so I had to write a second SDK app to do this.  I am actually in the process of adding an extra interface so the dispatcher can add extra zones to the list, which will then turn it into a RoutePlanItem, create a new route and delete the old route.  This will be better as the final component is an after-the-fact UI where delivery's can be confirmed based on finding document numbers embedded int eh Garmin text and then pulling the GPS info to show a truck arrived in that customer zone and the item was marked "delivered" by the driver.  If I did simply allow the dispatcher to add the extra delivery manually, it would not be searchable later, so your suggestion is in fact the best route to go (no pun intended).

I have quite a few feature requests in for routing.  I deal with it a lot.  If Geotab would simply add a few more properties to the RoutePlan Item object like "InvoiceNumber", "Comments", or three or four user definable fields then you could do a lot more with it.  I will also be releasing a dispatch app for all resellers a little later.

Sounds like you got it though.

Even a single text box which we could parse info from would be a help.  I am currently using the method suggested in another thread of putting all information for each route item in the route comments.  Lots of parsing to do there and complex when a change is needed in the route.  I put in the feature request a little while back so hopefully they are piling up!
