Lock Screen Not Coming Up

0

We run Samsung Tab Active 2 with Android 8.1.  We are seeing a number of cases, where the driver starts driving and the lock screen does not ever come up.  We have found that pulling the tablet from the cradle and putting it back in the cradle will make the lock screen come up then.  It doesn't seem like it is a dock issue as the lock screen should come up regardless of charging or not.   We ensured the GPS is set to high accuracy.  Any suggestions or ideas we can try?  This is not limited to 1 device but we have seen it across probably 5 devices over the last few months and that is just drivers reporting it.  I'm sure there are other drivers not reporting it.

Hey Brent,

Our lockscreen works in 2 ways. If it's not charging then it does not use the GPS on the tablet to control the lock screen. We do this to save battery life. If the tablet is charging then we will use the tablet GPS to control the lock screen and this way you will get a more responsive lockscreen.

When on battery you referenced you don't use GPS.  Do you use something else?

The thing is we ARE docked and powered.  I'm wondering if the app thinks it is on battery but in reality it is not.   It appears when the Samsung device is fully charged the lightning bolt goes away on the battery.  Android gives a notification saying This device is fully charged.   It seems like this would happen on almost every device since the devices are docked and powered in the trucks and would remain at 100%.

Maybe it is specific to Samsung Tab Active 2 tablets though and I'm not sure how many you have running on the road.  Samsung Tab Active 2 is becoming a very popular device for Fleet applications in general due to the POGO pins, durability, and affordability.

This seems like it might be a problem since it means lots of drivers going down the road without lock screens.

Just as I was typing this, we got a call from our reseller, where we had opened a support ticket as well, and Geotab switched a setting in our database to always use GPS for lock screen regardless if in battery or not.  This will hopefully fix our issue but probably doesn't fix root cause as I agree with you that it is nice to save battery life when undocked.  As an alternative, could you look at percentage of battery life and use GPS at 100% regardless but at 99% use GPS only if charging.  The lightning bolt only goes away when it hits 100%.

I posted to the forum as well as opened ticket with reseller because I thought maybe other users have had similar experience. Wasn't meaning to go around the reseller.

Thanks for your response.

We will take this feedback back and see what we can do. I'm aware of the support ticket and hopefully this new config will help with the lockscreen. On battery we use the server to control the lockscreen.

Thanks for the reply.

He was connected, no red x's on tablet, geotab, or gps and lock screen did not come up.  I  have seen the same exact scenario on numerous trucks.  We have a video of them undocking, docking, and lock screen coming up.  So if the server is controlling it, I'm not sure why it wasn't coming up.  We try not to address the 1 time glitch of things and only report when we see a pattern.

Again thanks for working with us to address these issues as they come up.
